UBS To Sponsor 2004-2005 MAGNIFICENT MUSIC SERIES at George Mason University's Center for the Arts in Farifax, VA
Fairfax, VA August 14, 2004 -- George Mason University's Center for the Arts, setting the standard for cultural excellence in the metropolitan D.C. area for nearly 15 years, each year presents an eclectic collection of performing arts events designed to engage and entertain. Magnificent Music, a series of six classical music performances, and one of the most popular series within the Great Performances at Mason collection of artists and events, consistently impresses audiences with its wide array of soloists and ensembles at the pinnacle of today's classical music genre.
Bill Reeder, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Center's academic parent organization, announced the UBS sponsorship of the Magnificent Music series saying, "Both UBS and George Mason's Center for the Arts combine excellence in their respective endeavors with a passion for service to the community. We are extremely pleased to welcome UBS as our newest partner in bringing world class symphonic music to the citizens of the region."

The Magnificent Music series is a selection of some of the classical music world's most renowned ensembles and soloists. Patrons have the opportunity to witness the passionate artistry of masterful conducting, the commitment of inspired soloists and the heritage of orchestras revered for centuries. The series opens with the heavenly tones of the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world: The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, on Saturday, October 9, featuring special guest, pianist Christopher O'Riley. On October 22, the Center welcomes Yuri Temirkanov conducting the powerhouse St. Petersburg Philharmonic with guest cellist Lynn Harrell performing great Russian works. Pianist Ivo Pogorelich, who's been compared to Horowitz, Paderewski and Rachmaninoff, makes his Center for the Arts debut on October 31. November 13 brings the Dresden Philharmonic under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, featuring youthful violin virtuoso Julia Fischer to the Center in a program of Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Dvorak. Heralding spring in March 2005, Katia and Marielle LaBeque return to the Center for the Arts stage as guest pianists with a new force in period music, the Venice Baroque Orchestra. Magnificent Music closes with the esteemed Kirov Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev and featuring Yefim Bronfman on piano on Saturday, April 2.
